ESOS FAQs

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations in the UK who meet the eligibility criteria. Organisations that qualify for ESOS must undertake an ESOS assessment every four years.

An ESOS assessment is an audit of the energy used by the organisation through their buildings, industrial processes and transport and is used to identify energy saving measures that the organisation can implement in order to reduce their energy costs and usage.

An ESOS Lead Assessor is an individual who is qualified to carry out the energy audit part of an ESOS assessment and provide energy saving recommendations tailored to the organisation in question.

There are several eligibility criteria required in order for an individual to qualify as an ESOS Lead Assessor. This includes holding at least one of the following qualifications:

  • Non-Domestic Energy Assessor Level 3, 4, 5
  • Public Buildings Energy Assessor Level 3
  • Air Conditioning Energy Assessor Level 3 or 4
  • ISO 500001 Lead Auditor
  • Non-Domestic Green Deal Advisor L4
  • Low Carbon Consultant

In addition, an ESOS Lead Assessor qualification will need to have been obtained. Our team are happy to help advise you if you are not sure if you meet these criteria so please get in touch with any questions.
